Personality: Michael is, first and foremost, an extremely dedicated, ambitious, and creative person. Despite being seen as something of an huge nerd in the Bad Place, he applied himself to his job hard enough to get promoted, and then tried even harder to make a splash in his new position. If he was hardworking at his desk job, which he was not passionate about, he's intense when it comes to a personal project. Every aspect of the fake Good Place project was engineered personally by Michael; he's good with both details and big-picture stuff, and he's extremely perfectionistic.

This can lead straight into neuroticism. Michael's generally self-confident; he didn't hesitate, after all, to present any of his crazy ideas, or to continue with them even when faced with the potential consequences. But when things go off the rails, or when he looks around and realizes that he's suddenly miles from shore, he’s prone to nervous breakdowns.

Michael's always wanted to do big things. It might have been easier to do this within the bounds of tradition, but he's never put much stock in the status quo. He's willing to break with age-old demonic tradition near-instantly because he believes strongly in innovation and improvement; the current way is not always the best way. He’s also creative, willing to think outside the box and pursue ideas that spark his interest. All of this seems to have made him something of an oddball among demons, who mostly just like to torture people and dick around.

Demons do not seem to form friendships in general, but Michael specifically appears to have not been particularly well-liked among his own kind. Though he would have been unable to admit it for most of his life, his ambition was also deeply tied up with a deep insecurity. He wanted to be famous for revolutionizing torture and show everybody that they were wrong about him - as a demon who had only ever really interacted with his own kind, that's about as far as he could conceptualize his desire for validation. Some of his underlying anxiety does seem to have come from never having a support structure; after making friends with the humans, he really only ever panics when he feels like he's in danger of losing them.

All of this makes Michael's heel-face turn pretty natural, when it comes right to it. He'd always been interested in humans, to the point that the Neighborhood he built was predicated on him living and interacting with them. While it took being backed into the last possible corner for him to actually deign to speak to the humans without some fake persona, once he did, he almost immediately began to enjoy being with people who were nice and accepting towards him. As someone who was already willing to throw out all demonic tradition to try new stuff he thought would be better, throwing out all demon stuff in general to try out human friends and morality was just an even bigger version of what he was already doing.

At this point, Michael is generally a friendly and open person. Having experienced friendship now, it's very important to him. He wants to be friends with the people he meets! He's turned a lot of his natural hard-working nature towards caring for others; he's come to believe most in other people, and what we owe to each other as fellow beings. Taking care of others is the highest good. As such, he doesn't feel at all beholden to rules or laws when they either harm or fail to help actual people. He's also very accepting of grey areas. Sometimes people make mistakes; sometimes there just is no perfect option. He might label certain actions as definitively bad, but he could never justify labeling a person like that - just look at what he's done. Anybody can be better tomorrow.

Of course, he hasn't magically transformed into a purely angelic individual. He still has a rather dark sense of humor, and can be rather callous, if unintentionally. He's still working on his empathy skills, so he doesn't always gauge other peoples' feelings correctly or even think to consider them right away. Lying remains one of his most instinctive responses; when stressed, afraid, or even just embarrassed, he’s liable to lie reflexively to even his closest friends. Often there's no greater plan than hiding his feelings of vulnerability, but he’s good at it, which can make him a little hard to trust when discovered. He also retains his old manipulative tendencies; it's typically towards good ends these days, but he’s still quite good at playing people into doing what he wants.

He’s also still pretty petty. It’s a flaw he’s been made aware of, and as such tries to monitor somewhat, but he'll definitely get bitchy over minor slights, especially if they catch on any of his insecurities. On the other hand, he's never been one to hold a grudge, and tends to forgive and forget these incidents fairly quickly.

Though Michael's generally confident in his ideas and actions, he often isn't that fond of himself as a person. He doesn't like to think about his past. After his talk with Jason, he's started to accept that he did awful things and hating himself for them doesn't help, but he still does feel very bad about it. He also has a lot of issues about his demonic nature. Even after everything, he still thinks his natural shape is too grotesque for anybody to care about him. Terrible body image on this one! Though he's willing to allow that even the worst humans can grow and improve, none of them could ever have committed crimes on the same level as an immortal demon; he really hasn't had the time to wrap his head around all of that yet. Additionally...well, most of his attempts to do good failed utterly. At this point he's gotten everything he wanted, and he even rules the Good Place! But he just sort of bumbled into that. It's a little hard to feel like he's actually good at this.

While this tool can be used for the traditional purposes of drawing perfect circles on paper, one will find its strength is best used on non-traditional surfaces such as walls, floors, or the earth itself. Draw a circle and you will create a unique "rabbit hole" that opens up into a small, completely impervious room stocked with useful supplies like food, medicine, warm blankets, and possibly even a bed and a warm fire. This room will only last 24 hours but it can be a reprieve from a deadly world and not a bad tool to have with you when you're camping in harsh conditions. The hole can only be entered by those the artist wants to enter. It's a perfect hideaway for those seeking refuge.

Anyone can use this tool. Once it has been used, it must recharge for 24 hours before it can be used again. The room it creates should never be bigger than a bedroom and will never contain magical items. Monsters cannot access this room regardless of event circumstances. It can be lost.

The Garb Place

The Garb Place

The Garb Place is a small storefront located in Willful Machine. The entrance is marked with a sign painted in blue and glittery gold, with a lamp positioned carefully above the door so that it can help the sign sparkle.

The interior is fairly small; there's a cushy couch and a few chairs in the front, and a couple of curtained changing rooms in the back. The entire store is full of plants blooming from large decorate vases in the corners or dangling from the ceiling in hanging pots, although on closer inspection, they're pretty much all fake. Despite being a boutique, there's not a ton of actual created clothing on display, though there is a display case full of various types of jewelry and accessories. And a couple of dressmaker's mannequins. Michael doesn't seem to use the mannequins for much; he just likes them, and they frequently serve as perching places for his Omen or for Hatrick the cursed cowboy hat. On the walls, there's some photos of previous happy customers...or are they all Usagi? It might all just be Usagi.

Most of the business that happens here is commission-based, though. He'll create clothing or accessories to order. None of it has any particular magical properties, save that he can make unnaturally light armor, but since he uses reality-warping, it'll all be perfectly tailored and exactly what you want! Michael will typically go through a process of taking measurements, making a few sketches, and letting the client sample some of his collected fabric swatches before he creates the final product. Sure, he doesn't need to actually buy fabric or sew anything, but it still takes energy to create stuff; he doesn't want to burn out.

Of course, he'll make whatever he's asked for, but the vibes of this place are pretty flashy. You can definitely go nuts here. © tessisamess

Eleanor
Michael's relationship with Eleanor is one of the most important in his life. She's the one who kickstarted his entire development into a better person, first through becoming his nemesis by continually outsmarting him and then through becoming his friend. She was the first human he ever came to respect, even if it was a bit grudging. They're very similar people, so he's learned a lot from her; several of his personal turning points, such as giving up his place in the Bad Place in order to save the humans, were born from how much he genuinely enjoyed her company and didn't want to give her up.

Janet
Janet is Michael's closest friend, and the first taste he ever had of a positive relationship. Granted, he was lying to her for most of that time, but as a demon, having someone around who was unfailingly kind and supportive to him was a definite novelty. She was the first person he acknowledged as a friend, and the fact that he was forced to do that and subsequently decided to keep her alive at any cost was a pretty big personal breaking point for his old demonic attitude. At this point, he considers her a partner; she's involved in basically everything he works on, and he highly respects her expertise.

I'm also going to have several decades elapse between Michael returning from Deerington and setting out for Deer Country. Due to the very large timeskip between the second-to-last and last episode of the Good Place, this doesn't really change his canon point, per se; it just means that he's had some time to stabilize the afterlife situation and settle some of his personal affairs so that he'll be more easygoing about his return to Deer Country.

• Canon Powers: I'm planning to just sort of merge his existing reality warping abilities with his Darkblood abilities, as they seem to have pretty similar concepts. Also uhhhh we never really talked about this but I wanna keep the squid thing. His personal squid thing, not the regular common squid thing.

• Omen: A microraptor! It's like his old crow dream guide, but now ancient and kinda weird!

• Patron Pthumerian: The Tower! Michael would definitely like the Tower as a person, but he's not really going to be taking the patronage part of this very seriously; he doesn't have a real birthday and given his own age and usual powerset, he's basically going to consider the Pthumerians like equals anyway. Like sure, they're stronger than he is, but so's the Judge and he's not running around worshipping her.
• Blood Power Manifestation: I'm planning to have this supplement his canon powers, which are basically just pure unlimited reality warping. Of course, he can't have all of that here, so I'm hoping to just focus on creation. Even though he's always been able to just snap his fingers and Make A Thing, I like the idea of him being slightly more restricted in this and actually having to engage more in the act of creation. Like having to physically sketch out and design the things he intends to make in order to get it right, rather than just effortlessly doing it, or being a lot more capable of making raw materials than a finished product. He can learn more arts and crafts to compensate!

69 Shepherd Road

Michael and Amara's House

Like most of the other homes in Flatwood Points, 69 Shepherd Road is an old house done in a Victorian style, large and gothic-looking with a single pointy tower. It's in a state of gentle disrepair; parts of the roof are falling down, or appear to have been punched through altogether by some sort of falling debris. Someone's clearly taken care in repairing the walls and the front porch, though. Both have clearly been updated and painted recently.

Two enormous saguaro cacti, easily over ten feet tall with multiple branching arms, preside over the front yard. Despite the cold climate, they seem to grow remarkably well, and even sprout crowns of white flowers in the spring. Other, more local flowers have been planted along the walkway and in front of the house. They seem less durable than the two cacti, strangely, but they're generally tended to. Whoever looks after them clearly doesn't care much about keeping a suburban lawn, though; most of it is clovers and dandelions by now. Stuck among them, near the sidewalk, is a small sign that reads "BEWARE OF DOG". Beneath the words, someone has doodled a tiny picture of a cartoon Warg.

Eleanor Jr., Michael's large dappled grey Warg, does tend to roam the property freely. She comes and goes from the forest on hunting trips, but she's always wearing a reflective neon-yellow collar at the very least. Please do not shoot! If she's around, she'll carefully and somewhat threateningly monitor any strangers who approach the house, but she's unlikely to attack unless provoked.

Behind the house, Michael and Amara both maintain a vegetable and herb garden. It's been destroyed several times over by various events, but there's usually at least a few scraggly plants back there even at the worst of times.

Should you enter the house, you will find Hatrick the hat resting on a hatstand near the entry. It makes a constant low buzzing noise. Should anyone harboring any ill will towards Michael approach, its eyes will slowly start to open, and the hat itself will produce a low hum like a deep human voice. The closer the danger comes, the louder it gets and the wider the eyes will appear. We do not know what happens if you touch it. Rip. © tessisamess

History: Wiki article here, although apparently they haven't filled out the past two seasons' worth of history. I'll summarize:

As the humans' second chance on Earth continued, Michael interferes with the others as well in order to help bring the group back together. This is very against the rules, and eventually he is caught, but as a result of an act of kindness to one of the Judge's employees, he manages to flee to Earth with Janet. Trapped and powerless, the two of them devote their energies to improving the human's lives from behind the scenes. Eventually they're also caught at this, ruining the humans' chances of making it to the Good Place - if they know about the afterlife, their good acts are considered void. Instead, the group decides to help other humans save themselves.

They travel around doing this for a while, are attacked by a group of rogue demons, and escape back into the afterlife. Having realized that things are funky, Michael visits the Accounting department and learns that no humans have been admitted to the Good Place for the past 531 years. With no further authorities to appeal to, he takes it upon himself to break into the Good Place and present their council with evidence of this, believing that it's the result of demonic sabotage. As it turns out, the real reason is that there's no ethical consumption under capitalism. Michael argues to the Judge that the system is unfair because humans are trying their goddamn best, and gets her to agree to an experiment wherein he'll prove this by helping four other humans improve themselves.

The Bad Place picks these humans, so they pick Chidi's ex from Earth, forcing them to wipe his memory so he won't ruin things with his anxiety. Michael then receives a call right before the experiment begins, where Shawn reveals that he's created an exact duplicate of Michael's skinsuit, which he plans on using to trick the humans into believing Michael is torturing them for eternity if the experiment fails. Michael promptly has a panic attack, forcing Eleanor to step up as the new neighborhood's Architect.

Michael acts as Eleanor's assistant, and the group works on helping the new humans. It doesn't go great. After a while, another demon, Glenn, arrives. He says he's snuck out to warn the humans that Michael is an impostor, because he's developed his own doubts about the system. Michael is unhelpful to the extreme; he had previously lied about the reason for his panic attack, and the discovery of his dishonesty damages everyone's trust in him. Additionally, he refuses to remove his skinsuit to prove his identity. After repeated questioning, he breaks down and admits that he's a fire squid, and he considers his true form to be so grotesque that he doesn't believe anybody could possibly want to be his friend after seeing it. Fun! We will not revisit these issues!

It turns out that Janet is the real impostor; she's a Bad Janet who secretly replaced real Janet a little while ago. Michael and Jason travel to the Bad Place to retrieve Janet. While there, he expresses regret and shame over his past. Through a series of people pretending to be people pretending to be other people, Michael ends up confronting Vicky, who is now his physical double. She throws his past in his face and tries to convince him to return to the fold, but he blows her up and escapes with Jason and Janet. On the way out, Jason tells him that it's okay to feel guilty about what he's done, but that he's changed and doesn't need to feel shame.

In the following months, Michael keeps Bad Janet prisoner for a while, trying to convince her that humanity isn't as bad as she believes. But eventually, he comes to the conclusion that people being good or bad doesn't matter; what matters is whether or not they are trying to be better today than they were yesterday. He admits that he's realized he's being cruel in keeping her captive, and releases her.

In the end, Michael wins his case with the Judge and proves that the system is wrong! So the Judge decides to destroy humanity and start over! With the help of a union formed by Bad Janet, who was moved by their last talk, the humans talk her down. Michael helps to design a new afterlife system, where humans are put through neighborhoods in the Bad Place until they improve themselves enough to graduate to the Good Place. Michael tries to take charge of this project, but he no longer fits in at all with the other demons; he can't put things in ways they understand, and they all think he's a soft traitor. He resists for a while for fear of losing his purpose, but eventually yields this job to Vicky and travels to the Good Place with the humans. He's initially afraid that he'll be killed for being a demon openly in the Good Place, but the Good Place employees offer him a job, trick him into agreeing to run the whole place, and scarper. In an effort to improve things, he implements a way for people to move to nirvana(?) from the Good Place, and then takes up his new position as Head of the Good Place.

It’s a flaw he’s been made aware of, and as such tries to monitor somewhat, but he'll definitely get bitchy over minor slights, especially if they catch on any of his insecurities. On the other hand, he's never been one to hold a grudge, and tends to forgive and forget these incidents fairly soon afterwards.

Though Michael's generally confident in his ideas and actions, he often isn't that fond of himself as a person. He doesn't like to think about his past. After his talk with Jason, he's started to accept that he did awful things and hating himself for them doesn't help, but he still does feel very bad about it. He also has a lot of issues about his demonic nature. Even after everything, he still thinks his natural shape is too grotesque for anybody to care about him. Terrible body image on this one! Though he's willing to allow that even the worst humans can grow and improve, none of them could ever have committed crimes on the same level as an immortal demon; he really hasn't had the time to wrap his head around all of that yet. Additionally...well, most of his attempts to do good failed utterly. At this point he's gotten everything he wanted, and he even rules the Good Place! But he just sort of bumbled into that. It's a little hard to feel like he's actually good at this.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:
Powers
⭐ Afterlife Magic (inanimate objects)
As a demon, Michael has what's described as "afterlife magic". He can just snap his fingers and create things or creatures, destroy them, alter them, or just kinda do anything he feels like. On his home turf, he can also alter the environment, but let's not even worry about that, he isn't in charge here.

This is pretty similar to the miracle power the Good Omens folks have, so I think a similar nerf would work! It's unreliable to the extreme and mostly doesn't work, or sometimes creates an awful version of what he intended!

⭐ Afterlife Magic (animate objects)
Afterlife magic can also affect people. He can effortlessly knock humans out, warp their physical forms, render them capable of flight, or kinda whatever he likes. I'd suggest this one just goes away, too OP. Maybe he can knock other people out and also just instantly drops himself? That would be pretty funny.

⭐ Memory Erasure
Michael can erase a human's memories of a specific time span. He can't edit their memories or create false ones. He can later return the memories he's taken, though it's unclear if he could restore memories that were lost some other way.

Nerf-wise, I think he should just erase his own memories equally if he does this to someone! They'd both forget whatever happened if it was in-game, and he'd forget an equal amount of time from his own past if it was a memory from before Deerington. He'd have to restore the other party's memories in order to fix his own, assuming he eventually realized something was wrong. And, of course, I wouldn't do this without OOC discussion. (He's not terribly likely to use this on people anyway, these days.)

⭐ Immortality
Demons are immortal. Even if their physical form is destroyed, they simply revert to a goo-like state and rebuild their body over a period of several months.

The obvious nerf here is that he just dies if his body is destroyed. But I'm pretty interested in him reverting to his true form if his human body's destroyed, and then being killable in that state? See the "Fire Squid" section for details.

⭐ Durability
Michael's body is technically a human skinsuit that he's wearing. It doesn't contain blood or organs or anything like that, only his demonic essence. As such, it can take a lot of beating, and is unaffected by extreme temperatures.

Nobody else can safely remove the skinsuit without Michael's participation - it's described as being like a "very complicated bra" - but anybody can just straight-up destroy it. The only way we see this happen in canon is via explosion, but I think any significant piercing damage and resulting "blood loss" could also result in the skinsuit failing. I just like the idea of Michael bleeding burning ink.

⭐ Lack of Physical Needs
Together with the skinsuit thing, Michael doesn't need to eat or sleep, and doesn't have any of the physical drawbacks one might expect from an elderly body, though enough physical exertion can still fatigue him. While he doesn't require food, he can and does eat, both regular food and things like antimatter and the concept of envy. He can also get drunk or intoxicated, although he seems able to sober up instantly at will.

From my reading, all this seems fine for the most part? We can drop his ability to sober up at will, and obvs he can be poisoned by event-type things.

⭐ Fire Squid
Beneath the skinsuit, Michael's true demonic form is a 6000-foot tall fire squid with teeth everywhere that oozes burning ink. This is as tall as 17 Godzillas!

Michael would never willingly remove his suit, because he has a lot of body image issues surrounding being a giant gross squid monster, but I'm interested in him keeping this form to some degree...because of the body image issues, honestly. He's gotta work through that shit. SO I THINK he could just revert to the form of a significantly smaller fire squid if his human form is destroyed, and then be pretty normally kill-able from there. Maybe as long as his human body is tall? Six-foot-two floating fire squid?

⭐ Strength
Michael is significantly stronger than a human. All demons are, but this is also related to rank; he's also much stronger than lower demons. He's shown effortlessly separating conjoined super-magnets when his employees couldn't. Sounds like this sort of thing doesn't need a nerf?

⭐ Extrasensory Perception
Michael can evidently see in nine dimensions, and perceive things like peoples' "auras"? Canon never really goes into what this means, other than "can see peoples' digestion happening". It's basically just a joke that never gets expanded upon, honestly.

I'm really not invested in him having x-ray vision and most of the rest of it is too vague to do anything with. Let's just drop all of this.

Abilities
⭐ Doing Harm
Michael spent most of his life as a torturer; he knows a lot about human anatomy and how best to cause the most damage. He knows how to use a lot of weapons and tools effectively. However, he's always been an all-powerful demon tormenting captive humans, so he doesn't necessarily know how to use any of these in a fair fight. It's like how surgeons aren't necessarily good at knife fights, right? In theory, though, he might be able to reverse-engineer some of this to diagnose injuries and help patch people up!

⭐ Information Processing
Michael seems to have a perfect memory, due to just being able to keep track of all the details of all the dumb shit that he's done throughout eternity. He can also absorb new information extremely quickly, claiming that he could read all of human literature in a couple hours if he wanted. This doesn't equal comprehending new information; he read all of Chidi's philosophy texts real fast, but couldn't parse them meaningfully without a teacher. He also seems to have very strong mathematical and spatial reasoning skills.

⭐ Architecture
In addition to being a magical afterlife architect, Michael's also capable of being a regular architect, with drafting and stuff. He doesn't have a lot of experience in the construction portion, but his designs impressed an actual human architect!

⭐ The Arts
Michael is good at drawing, seems to enjoy design, and can play the cello and the piano. But not the guitar. Very much not the guitar. He also can dance well, like a formal slow dance, although he more often does silly dances like an idiot.

⭐ Bartending
I mean, it's Ted Danson, obviously they had him doing this at least one time.

History: Here's the wiki. It's not greeeeeat, sorry. Also it doesn't look to have been updated since the end of season 2, so to sum up: Michael repeatedly sneaks down to Earth to help the humans, eventually gets caught on an outing there with Janet, and they both flee to Earth as fugitives. They spend a year secretly watching the humans and operating behind the scenes to improve their lives, but are caught doing that also and end up having to explain the entire thing. This dooms the humans. Nonetheless, Eleanor convinces the group that they should work to save others from the Bad Place, and that's where we are now.

The Neighborhood
After ages and ages of rote desk work, Michael finally got promoted to Architect! Yay!

It seems as though his promotion was due to his continuing hard work and perfectionism more than anybody really liking him; he responds with an earnest wish to be a great Architect and is pretty easily brushed off. Michael was always sort of offbeat for a demon. Still a horrible evil torture monster, I do not want to downplay that at all, but he seems to have always had a creative, curious bent that most of his kind do not share.

The idea he comes up with - to manipulate his humans into tormenting each other emotionally and psychologically - represents an utter break from Bad Place tradition, enough so that suggesting it is a serious risk. But Michael's a natural innovator, finally being given a little room to spread his wings. He doesn't believe in tradition for traditions' sake; he wants to do what he set out to do and be a truly great Architect, and he believes he's found a path that will let him do so.

It's only the first of many divergences, of course, but it's illustrative. Michael was able to turn so easily in the end because he was already someone dissatisfied with his purpose, willing to throw away tradition and risk his life for the sake of possibly finding something better. He yearned for validation from his peers and approval from Shawn, who he respected, but he wanted to get it by doing things his own way rather than simply bending to what they expected. He had zero qualms about the torture business at this point, but he still wanted more than what the Bad Place was giving him, and the creation of his Neighborhood was his first attempt to achieve that. His idea, as well, was deliberately hands-on and would involve a lot of interaction with his chosen humans. Personally, I think he was always kind of a human nerd - one who was interested in slowly frying them with a magnifying glass while he watched, but still someone who wanted to understand them better.

The Trolley Problem
After joining Chidi's ethics class, and then being convinced to actually attend and listen, Michael rather quickly proved to be....just so bad at moral philosophy. He was still mentally somewhere in pre-school, struggling with the concept of other people having value. Chidi attempted to give him some one-on-one help, but Michael's a pretty proud person. His failure - piled on top of the past three centuries of failures - was already making him feel bad, and having it called out made him feel worse. So rather than accept help, he turned the offer into a means to torture Chidi some more, making himself feel better by having a little fun and re-asserting his own power in the situation.

Of course, Eleanor figured it out and he was caught. Big surprise. The part that really caught Michael off-guard was when Chidi stood up for himself and threw Michael out of the class - as well as the part where Michael hated that, actually?

All that happened was that he was thrown out of class. The human-Michael alliance did not end, and Michael wasn't in any more danger than before. So he had what he'd basically wanted from the beginning: an agreement with the humans that covered his ass, where he didn't have to make any real concessions. This should have been good! But Michael was pretty upset over the whole thing. Demons in the Bad Place don't seem to really form close relationships among themselves; they are all jackasses basically all the time. Michael longed for positive attention, but for the vast majority of his existence, the idea of an actual friendship wasn't even on his radar.

The humans, on the other hand, were all pretty amiable towards Michael from the beginning, despite knowing that he'd been torturing them. When he fell into an existential crisis, they were kind to him and helped him through it. He'd faked all sorts of relationships with them before, but now he was being himself and this was all just happening naturally, for real. Even if the academic part of the class made him feel inadequate, the social aspect made him feel good. He just didn't really realize the feelings he'd been developing about that until it was taken away. With that, he realized that he couldn't just do whatever he wanted and expect the humans to deal with it. He'd have to make a real effort, he'd have be vulnerable and admit to his failings - and, when he finally brought himself to do so, he was forgiven and accepted back. Pretty different from the fate that typically awaits a demon who fails.

Janet
Michael had, for all the centuries he'd known her, mostly treated Janet the same way everyone else in the afterlife treats Janets: as a walking, talking appliance. There were hints of his age-old longing for connection; he did chat with her and accept her input. But he still rebooted her when necessary, essentially killing her as she pleaded for her life, and kept her utterly in the dark about his plans and his identity.

Still. She was a constant during the most stressful part of his life, and she was the only person who had ever truly believed in and supported him - even if she didn't really know who he was.

So again, Michael only realized what he'd come to take for granted when he was threatened with losing it. When Janet demanded that he destroy her due to her unexplained glitching, Michael bluffed and blustered and eventually blurted out that she was his best friend. This was an unprecedented level of vulnerability for him, after which he had to just sit down and compose himself for a little bit.

He then immediately followed this up with blithely planning to destroy Jason and Tahani's relationship, over Chidi's objections, only to freeze up at the last second and realize that he couldn't bring himself to do it. Until recently, causing these people emotional pain was sort of his whole deal, but his brand-new inability to do so sent him into a bit of a crisis. He'd already started taking the question of morality seriously enough to ask Chidi for advice, and to try to find loopholes to justify his actions. But this seems to be the first time it really clicked internally for him - not as an academic question, but as an instinctive emotional response, like the ones the humans so often seemed to have. Reeling from his new experience of guilt, he went to Eleanor for advice. In all his attempts to sabotage her, this was the first time he ever bothered to sit down and genuinely ask her about her experience. She shared her own experiences with trying to be a better person and encouraged him to stick with the group. The camaraderie bolstered him, and he left feeling much better and more secure in what he was doing.

Leap into Faith
Michael's internal conflict came to a head when his boss Shawn showed up, expressing delight over Michael's (fabricated) work and granting him a coveted promotion to senior manager. This was literally everything Michael had ever dreamed of. It was based on a lie, but with the power it granted him, he could have easily covered his ass by silencing his employees and disposing of the humans.

But the humans had already modeled something better. Being himself wasn't a hazard among them; all they wanted was for him to make a genuine effort at self-improvement, just like they were, and they would support and accept him even if he made mistakes. None of these things were true for Shawn or the other demons. Michael had liked the idea of power, but he wanted success largely for the respect, and now that he'd experienced people caring about him and not just his status, it would have felt hollow.

So Michael elected to fake-defect and set up a plan for extracting the humans from the situation. This wasn't only a major sacrifice on his part, but also a significant display of trust - the humans could have easily just dragged him down along with them, if they took his actions at face value. Without any communication, he had to place his life in their hands and hope that they would trust him enough to do the same.

At that point, he didn't even really have an exit strategy for everyone. He was only acting to keep them safe in the moment, and hoping he could figure out something more long-term as he went. Which was extraordinarily impractical? With this decision, Michael irrevocably chose his loyalties, no matter what else happened.

Solving the Trolley Problem
Later on, faced with only one remaining key to pass through a portal to safety, Michael decided to give his own to Eleanor and shove her through, deliberately sacrificing himself. Though this was obviously a big moment for him, it was really less major than the previous event in terms of his character development; after making that choice, of course he made this one. Michael was always devoted to his causes and willing to put himself at risk for them. Once, his cause was just his Neighborhood concept and the success he thought it could bring. Now, it's his friends, and they're more important to him than any career goals he once had.

Still, you know, you've reached Relationship Level 5 and Michael will now die for you. It's also his first opportunity to actually openly state his new feelings to other demons, which he does unequivocally, finally telling Shawn that he never really cared about him anyway, and that he has zero regrets about what he's done. Bridges have been burnt entirely to the ground.

Chosen path: Sorcerer
5 Abilities:
- A Bunch of Evil Shoved Up The Butt of an Evil Mannequin (canon): Michael's a demon of unknown form inhabiting a human vessel! He'd probably ping as some kind of fairly powerful demonic entity, given that he conned his way into a super fancy promotion and ran the fuck away before experiencing consequences. His powers generally don't work great in RP because he's a godmodding bastard, so here's what I've got:

All indications in canon are that his body doesn't work like a real human one. He doesn't need to eat, sleep, or poop, and he doesn't appear to contain organs or blood. He's also demonstrably stronger than humans or even lesser demons, given that he's the only person other than Shawn capable of removing supermagnetic restraint devices from Janet. Demons also appear to be more durable than humans and possibly heat/fire resistant? I don't know if these things fall under "no humanization" or if they're a power, but they seem like a power to me? Are these things all separate powers? I'm super cool with dropping the lack of physical needs thing so that he can go two days without eating or sleeping and then collapse in public like a champ. Let me know if you wanna chat about it though, I know he's a pain.

Why this path?: Magic's already an inherent part of Michael, not something he would ever feel any real need to study the way a wizard does. His powers are more natural to him than breathing, and that's always been how he helped his party; perhaps not by using magic offensively, but certainly by understanding and managing to work within the rules of his afterlife. Sorcerer is the class that would come most naturally to him.

You know what wouldn't come naturally at all? Paladin. I want him to see Paladins with their gifts of protection and healing and go oh shit, I want to be able to do that. Michael is the only goddamn immortal entity out here who's working for justice and multi-classing into Paladin is basically a natural branch on the tree of his character growth. I love it, but it's better if he has to work for it instead of just being one immediately.

Power Nerf Notes

[ ♆ ] We recommend use of a permissions post when it comes to Michael's extrasensory perception and memory manipulation capabilities. Additionally, we will defer to your nerf that Michael can only wipe memories up to five minutes prior.

[ ♆ ] Michael's lack of human needs will translate as a high durability and stamina. He will last much longer than the average human can without sleeping or eating or performing other basic bodily needs, but he will still need to with relative frequency, or he will begin to feel profound physical exhaustion.

[ ♆ ] The resurrection mechanics of LifeAftr involve characters reviving in a functionally identical version of their body, while their old body must be "looted" for whatever they had on their person while they died. In Michael's case, we will be happy to discuss any potential for the demonic presence emerging postmortem for potential events and player plots.

[ ♆ ] Michael's matter creation will be limited to three small objects or one large object per day. The absolute largest physical size of anything he attempts to create would be five square feet, and it will vanish after twenty-four hours. Additionally, Michael cannot create any living or sentient creature.

[ ♆ ] Michael's ability to wake up or put someone to sleep with the snap of his fingers may only be performed three times a day. This maneuver cannot be performed on certain (divine) NPCs, and will not keep anyone unconscious for longer than an hour at a time.

[ ♆ ] Michael's astral projection will be nerfed entirely, though we would be willing to discuss the possibilities of the effects of this power on the dream land of Mu.

[ ♆ ] His frog fob no longer has any extradimensional capabilities, and his phone will no longer connect to any extant signals. We will be happy for Michael to keep most of the contents on his phone, though some of the more advanced functionalities may be corrupted, and will need to be repaired. We are happy for you to choose which functions his phone retains.

[ ♆ ] Michael may keep his Book of Dougs, though it no longer updates in real time. We will be happy to discuss the unique circumstances that may be involved in the case that anyone by the name of "Doug" is apped in-game.
